Wednesday January 30, 2008

marijuana farm Sheriff’s deputies raided an upscale Tesoro del Valle home Tuesday - confiscating more than 1,000 marijuana plants including some with names like “Big Bud” and “Beastie Boom” - after a neighbor walking his dog tipped them to an odor wafting from the residence.

“This is the first ever incident in Tesoro,” Sheriff’s Sgt. Phil Morris said at the scene. “It is also the first marijuana incident in the entire area this year.”

Detectives from the Sheriff’s Narcotics Bureau served a search warrant Tuesday morning at the home in the 29300 block of Via Estancia in the unincorporated area of Tesoro after receiving a tip roughly 10 days ago about a suspicion of marijuana being grown at the residence, Morris said.

The street value of the plants was estimated at $1 million to $3 million, Morris said. Each fully grown plant was valued at about $1,400 to $2,000.

The resident and suspect, identified as Jace Edwards, a 32-year-old white male, was not at the location when the search warrant was served. However alert deputies spotted him a short time later driving on Avenida Rancho Tesoro and detained him without incident after a traffic stop.

Edwards was taken into custody at 1:30 p.m. on a felony charge of cultivating marijuana. He is being held on $30,000 bail and other charges may be pending. The investigation is ongoing.

Marijuana grow houses found in Belleview, Marion Oaks

OCALA – Over the weekend, local drug agents dismantled two more marijuana grow houses - the fourth and fifth since the beginning of the year - and arrested four people they believe were tied to the operation.

The the most recent grow houses, located in Belleview and Marion Oaks, contained 243 marijuana plants growing in various stages and weighing an estimated 103 pounds. Agents also found 5 1?2 pounds of the illegal drug, officials said.

The four arrested - Fernando Gomez, 42, Cesar Fuentes, 49, Maria Fernandez-Leon, 33, and Jose Fernandez, 53 - are all from Cuba, according to drugs agents. They said the majority of those arrested in 2007 in connection to marijuana grow houses were from Cuba. Officials believe the area is attractive to them because it’s less visible, and they can blend in with the community.

Homes once used as grow-ops to be outed by Ottawa police

“For sale: Former grow-op. Some water and toxic mould damage. Electrical wiring poses fire hazard after tampering.”

That information isn’t commonly posted in real estate ads, but Ottawa police plan to make some of it available to homebuyers.

Starting Friday, the police service will begin posting the addresses of former marijuana grow operations and drug labs on its website.

Ottawa police said they dismantle about 50 marijuana grow houses and crystal meth labs in the city each year.

After the legal process, many of the homes are sold to people who may not be aware they were used for those purposes or the damage that could have resulted.

“A lot of people are afraid and they should be,” said Ottawa police Chief Vern White. “They’ll buy a house for … $350,000, and when they get the house find out they’ve got $100,000 damage as well.”

Hydroponics Lighting: Blue Spectrum V.S. Red-Orange Spectrum

By Jack Stone:

Hydroponics Light plays a major part in your success of your hydroponics project. Most hydroponic gardens are indoors and as such they need to have lighting of some kind. While you may be tempted to try using incandescent bulbs and lamps for light in your hydroponics system, they dont provide the right kind of light that your plants will need to thrive and grow. Hydroponics systems need full spectrum lighting that mimics the light from the sun.

Specific types of hydroponics gardens will also need a specific type of lighting. Many of you that are looking to put together a hydroponics kit will find that there is a range of hydroponics lighting on the market. Hydroponic vegetables grow best in blue spectrum light, which is a cooler form of light. Metal Halide lights are the most popular form of blue spectrum lighting. Hydroponics flowering plants grow best in red-orange light.

The best type of red-orange light is the high pressure sodium light (HPS). Blue spectrum light is great for leafy plants, such as Lettuce, Radish, or Collard. It also helps to keep the plant nice and compact. Many can find the plants in their hydroponics garden getting leggy as it strains for the light, blue light helps to combat this. This is the best type of hydroponics system light for a primary light source. The average Metal Halide light gives around ten thousand hours of good light. After that it will start to put out less and less light. The average Metal Halide light sold can put out a range of light from 175 watts to 1000 watts or more.

The wattage output you choose depends on how big your hydroponics system is. Are you just putting together a small homemade hydroponics kit or are you setting up a larger hydroponics garden? High Pressure Sodium lights producing an orange-red spectrum last around eighteen thousand hours of use. Its best for flowering plants, such as paper whites and iris. The orange-red light stimulates plants hormones, which makes for more flowering in the plant.

Be careful about placing a young plant under red-orange light. It may grow very quickly but you will see only vertical growth and it will become lanky and thin. This is because of the lack of blue spectrum light available to the new plant. The average wattage is about the same for red-orange lights, ranging from 175 to 1000 watts. Of course if your looking to cover more area then you can find professional grow lights in any spectrum with a higher wattage. The best way to light your hydroponics system seems to be with a combination of blue and red-orange light, to keep plants compact and flowering, or you can simply purchase a full spectrum light.

You can buy fluorescent lights for this. They are available in tubes or compact bulbs. Fluorescent lighting is mostly used to grow seedlings, but it will certainly grow a plant to maturity. This type of lighting can be an easy way to light your hydroponics system without the complication of hooking up both blue and red-orange lights or remembering which is which. Grow house raid nets 250 marijuana plants

BY AUSTIN L. MILLER

MARION OAKS - Acting on a tip, police executed a search warrant Tuesday and seized about 250 marijuana plants that were scattered throughout a residence.

Agents from the multi-agency High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area team entered the home at 7728 S.W. 138th St. Road in the Timber Walk subdivision. They said they found plants growing in the master bedroom, bathroom, spare bedroom and garage.

Another spare room apparently was used to package the marijuana for sale, agents said.

No one was home at the time of the raid, and no arrests had been made as of Wednesday. Officials discovered two pit bull terriers inside; the dogs had no food or water.

Officials said the plants were a mixture of mature ones and cuttings. Power for the operation was tapped from underground lines to circumvent the utility meter. Agents said the bedrooms and the garage were equipped with water and light fixtures.

Police weed out cannabis factory

Woman arrested following raid on home in Pearcey Road, Bedford.

A large cannabis factory was shut down on Tuesday when police raided a house in Bedford.

Officers entering the property in Pearcey Road found around 60 cannabis plants as well as ultraviolet lighting and hydroponics equipment in the loft.

Officers from the Kempston Safe Neighbourhood team made the bust shortly after 9am.

Their action followed an appeal at the end of last year for information about drugs.

A woman aged in her early 30s was arrested and taken to Greyfriars police station for questioning.

She has since been given bail pending further inquiries.

A spokeswoman for Bedfordshire Police said: “When people set up cannabis factories they often change the electrics of the building and can cause a fire risk to neighbours.

“They often line the windows and keep the curtains closed. There may also be a strong smell around the property.

“Bedfordshire Police are always keen to hear from anyone with worries or information about drugs.”

This follows actions in a number of states across the nation, which see’s simple marijuana possession for personal consumption dropping to the lowest law enforcement priority.

Ticket

The New Hampshire Coalition for Common Sense Marijuana Policy will hold a press conference prior to the hearing, to preview legislation that would replace criminal penalties for small marijuana offenses with simple citations.

Sponsors of the bill include Jeffrey Fontas (D-Nashua), Andrew Edwards (D-Nashua) who will speak in favour of HB1623.
